- Eating too fast
- Eating new foods
- Are at the wrong angle ( such as being propped with a bottle)
- Air bubbles in a bottle.
When food is stuck in a babies’ throat, he or she is probably unable to breathe and it is therefore very important to remove the item as quickly as possible. This is one of the reasons that it’s so important to never leave a baby unattended while they are eating, even once they are a toddler. If you see the food, and you can retrieve it without forcing it further down their throat or by cutting off their oxygen supply, do so right away.
Remember, if your baby can cry, they can get oxygen and they are not really happy wheels choking. In that case, they are probably scared and uncomfortable, but it is still necessary to remove the food item so that the situation does not get worse.
Otherwise, you’ll need to turn the baby on their stomach, against your arm and hold their head in your palm. Immediately apply five firm blows below their shoulder blades, turn the baby over and do five chest thrusts. Then check to see if you see the food, and if possible, remove it. If not, if nobody else there has already called for emergency medical services, do so, using speaker phone if possible so that you can repeat the procedure as necessary. If the baby is unable to breathe, perform rescue breathing until help arrives. Don’t stop until the help gets there or the child recovers. Follow up with your pediatrician as necessary.
